Rybelsus

Rybelsus - Hormone Replcement Therapy

Rybelsus is prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes to lower their blood sugar levels. Although Rybelsus wasn’t introduced as a weight management drug research has shown that it can be used to help patients lose weight. If you need to know more about Rybelsus tablets and their effectiveness in weight loss, contact us at Hormone Replacement Therapy LA.

What is Rybelsus?

Rybelsus (generic name: semaglutide) is a once-daily tablet prescribed to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Rybelsus works by mimicking natural incretin hormones in the body [1]. These hormones help regulate blood glucose levels. Incretin gets released after meals and stimulates insulin secretion.

What are the main active ingredients in Rybelsus?

Rybelsus contains the active ingredient semaglutide and belongs to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist drug class. It is FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes in adults.

What is Rybelsus used for?

It works by increasing the level of insulin released and decreasing glucagon secretion. It also slows down gastric emptying after eating. Rybelsus has the same active ingredient as Wegovy and Ozempic. Therefore, Rybelsus tablets could be used for weight loss. Each tablet of Rybelsus contains 3 mg, 7 mg, or 14 mg of semaglutide

Is Rybelsus used for treating type 1 diabetes?

Rybelsus is not for treating type 1 diabetes. In animal studies, it’s been reported that Semaglutide causes thyroid tumors or cancer. It is not known whether these effects would occur in people.

But there’s still a chance that semaglutide can cause health complications. In a 2022 report, the correlation between semaglutide and thyroid cancer for those who did or didn’t take was recorded. In that report, it was found higher rates of thyroid cancer in people who used semaglutide for 1-3 years [2].

How effective is Rybelsus for blood sugar control?

In a 6-month study, adults with an average starting A1C of 8.3% achieved the following reductions in A1C (a measure of long-term blood sugar control):

  • 7 mg of Rybelsus: A1C lowered by 1.0%
  • 14 mg of Rybelsus: A1C lowered by 1.3%
  • 100 mg of JANUVIA® (another medication): A1C lowered by 0.8%

Is Rybelsus taken for weight loss?

Rybelsus tablet is not typically used for weight loss, but many people found benefits in using it. People lost 5 pounds (2.3kg) while taking Rybelsus 7mg and 8.1 pounds (3.7kg) on average while taking Rybelsus 14mg.

One study reported that patients weighing an average of 196 pounds and taking the lowest dosage of Rybelsus can lose about 5 pounds over six months.

Is Rybelsus better than Ozempic for weight loss?

Although both of them contain semaglutide, they have some differences. Rybelsus is found in tablets, while Ozempic as injections.

Studies found that patients with type 2 diabetes who took 1.0 mg of semaglutide injection (Ozempic) reduced body weight by an average of 4.5 kg compared to patients who lost 3.7 kg with 14 mg of semaglutide tablet (Rybelsus) [4].

Is Rybelsus available over the counter, or does it require a prescription?

Rybelsus requires a prescription from a healthcare provider. It is not available over the counter. If you are considering using Rybelsus, we recommend consulting your doctor first to talk about its suitability for your specific health needs.

Are there any specific criteria for individuals who are prescribed Rybelsus?

When prescribing Rybelsus (semaglutide) for patients with type 2 diabetes, doctors consider several factors to ensure its safe and effective use:

Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes

Rybelsus is specifically meant for type 2 diabetes management. It is not suitable for type 1 diabetes. Individuals must have a confirmed diagnosis of type 2 diabetes based on blood tests and clinical evaluation.

Health Status and Medical History

Healthcare providers and doctors assess overall health, including any existing medical conditions (such as heart disease, kidney problems, or pancreatitis). Patients with a history of thyroid cancer or a family history of this cancer should avoid Rybelsus.

Kidney Function

Rybelsus is excreted mainly through the kidneys. Therefore, kidney function is crucial. Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with kidney problems.

Other Medications

Healthcare providers review the individual’s current medications, especially those affecting blood sugar levels. Some medications, like albuterol, jarsdiance, metformin, etc. may interact with Rybelsus, so adjustments may be needed.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Rybelsus is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited safety data. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should discuss alternative treatments with their doctor.

What are the benefits of Rybelsus in terms of overall diabetes management?

  • Blood Sugar Control: Rybelsus helps regulate blood sugar levels by mimicking natural incretin hormones. It reduces post-meal blood sugar spikes and promotes better glycemic control.
  • Weight Loss: Many users experience weight loss while taking Rybelsus. Weight reduction can positively impact insulin sensitivity and overall health.
  • Cardiovascular Health: Rybelsus has been associated with reduced cardiovascular risk in clinical trials. It may indirectly benefit heart health by improving blood sugar control and promoting weight loss.
  • Potential Kidney Benefits: Some studies suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists (like Rybelsus) may have protective effects on kidney function [3].

What are the potential side effects associated with Rybelsus?

What are the potential side effects associated with Rybelsus

  • Changes in vision
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Kidney problems
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Blurred vision

Can Rybelsus be used as a standalone treatment, or is it typically prescribed in combination with other diabetes medications?

Rybelsus (semaglutide) can be used both as a standalone treatment and in combination with other diabetes medications. Here are some considerations:

Monotherapy (Standalone)

Rybelsus can be prescribed alone for individuals with type 2 diabetes who need additional blood sugar control. It is suitable when metformin (a common first-line diabetes medication) is not sufficient or not tolerated.

Combination Therapy

Rybelsus can also be used alongside other diabetes medications:

  • Metformin: Often combined with Rybelsus for better glycemic control.
  • Insulin: Rybelsus can complement insulin therapy.
  • Other oral antidiabetic agents: Depending on individual needs and treatment goals.

Individualized Approach

Treatment decisions are personalized based on factors such as:

  • Blood sugar levels: How well the current treatment controls glucose.
  • Patient preferences: Some people prefer oral tablets (like Rybelsus), while others are comfortable with injectables.
  • Overall health: Consideration of other medical conditions.

What monitoring or follow-up appointments are recommended for individuals taking Rybelsus?

  • Regular Follow-Up Appointments: Schedule regular visits with your healthcare provider to monitor your progress. These appointments allow adjustments to your treatment plan based on your individual response.
  • Blood Sugar Monitoring: Monitor your blood sugar levels as advised by your doctor. Regular checks help assess how well Rybelsus is controlling your glucose.
  • Kidney Function Tests: Your doctor may order tests like serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). These tests help evaluate kidney function and detect any changes.
  • Thyroid Monitoring: Rybelsus may affect the thyroid. Thyroid function tests can assess any impact.
  • Adherence and Side Effects: Report any side effects promptly to your healthcare provider.

Are there any restrictions on alcohol consumption while taking Rybelsus?

While there are no known direct interactions between Rybelsus and alcohol, drinking alcohol may raise the risk of nausea and vomiting. It’s essential to monitor your body’s response and be cautious.

You can consume alcohol while on Rybelsus, but it’s crucial to limit your intake. For men, it’s generally recommended to have no more than two drinks per day. For women, the recommendation is to limit alcohol consumption to one drink per day.

Is Rybelsus better than metformin?

Metformin is the preferable choice as a medication for treating type 2 diabetes. Rybelsus is a newer type of medication that can help with treating type 2 diabetes. Metformin works by improving insulin regulation and lowering blood sugar levels. Rybelsus increases the amount of insulin your body releases and slows gastric emptying, which keeps you full.
