Hormonal Acne & Hormone Evaluation in Los Angeles

Adult acne can be influenced by changing hormone levels, but acne is multifactorial and does not automatically mean that a person has a hormone disorder. A medical evaluation is most useful when acne occurs together with other features that raise concern for androgen excess, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), medication effects, or another endocrine condition.

What Does “Hormonal Acne” Mean?

Hormone-sensitive acne often affects the lower face, chin, or jawline and may fluctuate with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, or changes in hormonal medications. Androgens can increase oil-gland activity and contribute to acne in susceptible patients.

However, the pattern alone does not diagnose a hormone disorder.

When Is Hormone Testing Worth Considering?

Hormone testing may be considered when acne is accompanied by irregular or absent periods, excess facial or body hair, scalp hair thinning, fertility concerns, rapid onset or severe androgenic symptoms, signs of insulin resistance, or other findings suggestive of PCOS or androgen excess.

Testing should be targeted to the clinical question rather than ordered as a broad panel for every person with acne.

Acne Treatment Usually Requires Dermatologic Care

Evidence-based acne treatment may include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, clascoterone, oral antibiotics in selected cases, combined oral contraceptives, spironolactone for appropriate women, or isotretinoin for severe or treatment-resistant acne. Medication choice depends on acne type and severity, pregnancy potential, medical history, and prior treatment response.

When acne is the primary problem, dermatology care remains important. Hormone evaluation complements acne treatment when the history suggests an endocrine contributor.
