Peptides are often marketed online for muscle growth, recovery and body composition. Some peptide-based drugs have legitimate medical uses, but that does not mean that unapproved growth-hormone secretagogues or “research peptides” are proven or appropriate for building muscle.
That depends on the specific compound. Peptides are a broad class of molecules, not one treatment. Some influence growth-hormone signaling, but evidence that experimental peptides safely increase muscle mass in otherwise healthy adults is limited.
CJC-1295 and ipamorelin are frequently promoted for body composition and recovery. Neither is FDA approved for muscle gain, anti-aging or general hormone optimization. The FDA has identified safety concerns for compounded CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, including limited clinical safety information and potential peptide-related risks.
FDA: Certain Bulk Drug Substances May Present Significant Safety Risks
Progressive resistance training, adequate protein and calories, sleep, recovery and treatment of genuine medical problems remain the foundation. If low testosterone, thyroid disease, nutritional deficiency or another endocrine disorder is suspected, testing should be based on symptoms and medical history.
Hormone treatment should be used for a documented medical indication rather than as a shortcut for physique goals. Testosterone replacement therapy, for example, is used for appropriately diagnosed hypogonadism—not simply to enhance muscle in people with normal testosterone.
Risks can include uncertain purity and potency, sterility problems, immune reactions, glucose effects, fluid retention and unpredictable endocrine effects depending on the compound. Online products labeled “research use only” are not established human treatments.
If loss of muscle, poor recovery or reduced strength is new or unexplained, evaluation can look for low testosterone, thyroid disease, sleep disorders, inadequate nutrition, medication effects and other causes before considering therapy.
